Tuesday, November 17, 2009-Today’s award recipient is Douglas Barton from Dryden Central School District nominated by Finn Wise
I would like to nominate Mr. Barton for the Apple for the Teacher Award. Mr. Barton is not one of my teachers at school but he has been my bus driver all the time from Kindergarten to 3rd grade. I think that he has been a bus driver for the Dryden Elementary School forever because he remembers driving some of the other kids’ parents in his bus to school when they were kids!
I like Mr. Barton because he takes good care of all the kids on his bus and he also teaches us good manners. When he stops to pick me up in the morning, Mr. Barton is always in a good mood and says here comes another beautiful day in Central NY!. While I get on the bus, he talks to my mom about the weather and other things. Mr. Barton knows a lot about the weather because when he’s not a bus driver he is a farmer who makes hay for his horses in the summer. My family went to visit his farm and I played in his barn.
On the bus, Mr. Barton makes sure that we follow all the rules. Sometimes one of us has to sit close to him in front when things are getting too loud. But most of the time, he is really nice and I think that he likes kids a lot. He always has candy for all the kids on the bus on Halloween. Mr. Barton is a really good bus driver. He has to go up and down a lot of steep hills and even when there’s a lot of snow and ice, he always gets us home safely. He also keeps his eyes open for dogs running loose. One time he told my mom about a dog lying by the side of the road. We went to look for the dog and brought him back to his home.
I know that Mr. Barton is going to retire soon and I think that he deserves a prize for being a great bus driver. I really like him!
