Reading Between the Lines: Travel and Tourism Narratives of the Empire State

Special Olympics Coaching Certification Training


When: March 12, 2010 12-3 PM
Where: Watkins Glen Field House

The training will meet the first two of five requirements in completing the Special Olympics Coach certification process, including a general orientation and basic introduction to Special Olympics, as well as a sports specific course in basketball and approaches to coaching individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Additional steps in the certification process include working ten hours with Special Olympics athletes and an experienced coach, completing the Special Olympics Application for Sports Training Certification, and submission of confirmed completion of the Protective Behaviors training program. Instructions on how to complete these final steps will also be given on Saturday. This is a free training. Participants must be at least 16 years old, and be registered by March 11. Farm Bureau Health, Fitness and Financial Fair

This program is focused on addressing the physical, financial and mental well being of rural residents. Although geared to farmers, this program will be helpful to anyone, and all residents from Schuyler and nearby counties are welcome to attend. Cool Kids Program Featuring Sylvia Markson and the Magic Trunk

Feline Follies: 19th Annual Charity Cat Show

2010 Regional Job Fair

Maple Weekend Celebrated at Arnot Forest

At the peak of maple syruping season, dozens of maple syrup makers around New York open their doors to the public in a celebration called New York Maple Weekend. The modern maple syrup making operation at Cornell University's Arnot Forest in Van Etten, NY will host a pancake breakfast, public tours, syrup tasting, and displays and demonstrations explaining new and old maple syruping technology. The huge evaporator will be running at full-tilt, with sap running from thousands of sugar maple trees directly to the sugarhouse. "Hoop it up for Haiti" 3 on 3 Basketball Event

Director Tom Scroggins made a documentary about Red Bird Mission, located deep within the forests of eastern Kentucky. The mountain people refer to it simply and affectionately as “Red Bird.” This mission has been in operation for nearly one hundred years. The scattered populations and cultural uniqueness make it difficult for service organizations to operate in this rugged, unforgiving land. 2nd Annual FREE Easter Egg Hunt at T-Burg Mini Golf

Where: T-Burg Mini Golf and Family Entertainment Center,  1966 Route 96, Trumansburg
T-Burg Mini Golf is once again hosting their annual Free Easter Egg Hunt. Family activities open at 10:30am and will include bounce houses, face painting, build a plane, balloons, arts & crafts, gymnastics, prize wheel, jelly bean guessing, and rubber ducky games.

There will be three separate Easter Egg Hunts; 11:00am for children 3 and under, 11:30am for ages 4 – 7 and 12:00pm for ages 8 – 12.  There will be over 6,000 colorful plastic age appropriate toy and candy filled eggs hidden for everyone to find. At each hunt, there will be one hidden golden egg that can be traded in for a larger prize.

This event will be held no matter the weather conditions, so parents and children are encouraged to dress appropriate. Participants should bring their own basket to hold all their eggs!

Adult Reading Group on Recent Immigrants

Where: The History Center in Tompkins Country

The History Center in Tompkins County will offer this spring a monthly adult reading group on recent immigrants. This timely discussion series will provide an engaging forum for participants to explore the individual stories of recent immigrants. Each meeting will feature a different book. Led by local experts, the series will explore the experiences of immigrants over the last generation. What was their journey to America? How have they survived in America? How has living in America affected culture and family roles? The series provides an opportunity to learn about the vital role that immigrants play in the economic and social life of Tompkins County. Participants will also have access  to an exhibit of Hungarian textiles and archives related to immigration in Tompkins County. Participants will receive a personal copy of each book. Because group size is limited to fifteen participants, please pre-register for this program. We'll start at 8:30, and by 2:00 you'll know how to evaluate and prepare your soil, set up small scale irrigation, plant, prune, fertilize, and control pests. Also, you'll learn the nutritional value of the fruits you grow and how to preserve your harvest. This workshop is geared towards serious gardeners or beginning farmers. Corning Community College's second annual ECOfest and E-Scrap Drive will include two performances by Jonathan Wood’s The Raptor Project. This event is scheduled for Saturday, April 24, 2010, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Wood will share his fascination with birds. Participants will receive an up close and personal introduction to a variety of raptors including a Golden Eagle. Wood is a licensed Master Falconer, Wildlife Rehabilitator, Raptor Propagator and Game Bird Breeder whose love of nature and wildlife is evident with his solar home in the New York Catskill Mountains. Participants will also have access to an exhibit of Hungarian textiles and archives related to immigration in Tompkins County. Participants will receive a personal copy of each book.
